This fits into the literal category in my eyes, because it represents who he is as a person. It's more realistic in explaining his status and what he loves to do due to the paint brushes and easel.
This painting fits into the concepts less expected way of expecting him to be portrayed. He is portrayed unusually with his hair over his forehead and his eyes not fully visible, and dark which has a concept behind it of darkness or shadows.
